Journey to Siem Reap, Cambodia
Thought for the title very long, have no idea how to name this post… and the post is going to sound like a daily diary as too many memorable things happened during this backpack trip. hehe…
This is my first backpack travel to Siem Reap, Cambodia. Many who have heard of this trip wondered why i chose this place as to them, it sounds dangerous. Even my aunt and uncle protested to my mum why letting my little sis and i went there and made my mum started to worry about our travel there too. However, all these opinions about Cambodia being dangerous are proved wrong, at least it is not so in Siem Reap.
Well, i’m going to start the travel with the first day… really want to jot down as many single detail as possible, too memorable… ![]()

Met a group of French senior citizens who are really lively and energetic on plane. At that moment, i promised to myself that i must be healthy always so that i can still go travel with friends… The journey from Kuala Lumpur to Siem Reap takes about 50 minutes (correction: it’s around two hours, thanks shlrene ). In Siem Reap, it is one hour later than Malaysian time. This means that it is 11am in Siem Reap when Malaysian time is 12 noon. I have to admit that Siem Reap Airport is very beautiful and clean. It’s simple but great. After arriving, we went to the booked hotel directly. It is actually an inn run by a family. It is in the heart of the city and looks simple but great, again i used this phrase, cause it is really so in SIem Reap. After seeing the room and unpacking, we went to Lucky Mall, which is not far from our staying place, to buy drinking water. The first sight that caught our attention in the mall was the delicious-looking ice cream. We tried out tiramisu, raisin rum and a double chocolate ice cream, if not mistaken. They are indeed very delicious and tasty. Yummy yummy… Later that night we went to the old market by tuk-tuk, a special transport there. We walked around the area named Pub Street. This street is of many restaurants and pubs, whether French cuisine, Italian pizza, Western food or Khmer cuisine ( local food ). We chose The Red Piano as our first day dinner restaurant. It is the restaurant Angelina Jolie had her dinner before, therefore a cocktail named upon her is created. We had Khmer style soup, curry chicken and fried chicken with ginger. They are very tasty and even better than our local food here. The atmosphere is very relaxing. After the dinner, we walked around the night market. A lot of souvenirs are sold here. We bought ourselves Angkor Wat-printed tee shirts and local handmade pencil case. After spending couple of hours there, we tried out walking back to the inn. On the way back, we passsed a very elegant hotel, namely Hotel de la paix. It costs $300 a night ( beyond our budget, sad ). We took the chance to explore the hotel and captured a lot of photos there. The atmosphere is very nice and romantic, i should say. After a long walking night, we went back to our room and rested early, for preparation to Angkor Wat the next day.

Early in the morning we went to the Angkor area to fulfill our aim of this trip. After ticket payment and getting the tickets with our face printed on it, we started our journey to Angkor Thom. There are several checkpoints in the Angkor area to check on our tickets. It is to avoid misuse of the tickets by the tourists as there are several packages like one day-trip, three day-trip and so on. Angkor Thom is very large. It consists of the Bayon, Baphuon, Terrace of the Elephants and Terrace of the Leper King. The tuk-tuk driver gave us three hours to walk around Angkor Thom. We took a lot of pictures of the grand building. We looked so tiny standing under the high and great Bayon. We finished walking around Bayon in about an hour so we started wondering why the driver gave a three hour-period and asked us to go to the Terrace of the Leper King to meet him. However, there’s a reason for everything. We lost our way during finding the way to Terrace of the Leper King. It costs us about two hours just to find the way to Terrace of the Leper King. Haha… On the way to Terrace of the Leper King, we walked pass Baphuon and Terrace of the Elephants. Of course we would not miss a single chance to snap the beautiful scenery. After Angkor Thom, we went to visit Ta Prohm, where Angelina Jolie shot the film Tomb Raider here. On the way, we passed Ta Keo, which is a very big building too. Ta Prohm is a temple with lots of trees, giant trees around. Our camera had a busy working day, haha… After a quick lunch, we continued our journey to Angkor Wat, one of the seven wonders in the world. There were fewer tourists around as they were still enjoying their lunch. We seized this opprtunity to truly explore Angkor Wat. Part of the building is under renovation, but still we managed to have a good look at the building. There are many delicate sculptures on the walls. The highest level was closed down due to renovation, thus unable to have the chance to have a view form the highest level.Sighed.. Anyway, it is already very worth to be there. After an hour or so in Angkor Wat, we went to rest on inn. After a good rest, we started on foot for dinner. This time we went to Dead Fish Tower, another restaurant with good food. I had this dish called Thai Amok which is really nice. It’s a bit like our otak-otak here but nicer and more delicious. My little sister tried out green curry while my friend ordered a set which consists of green curry, beef curry, ginger chicken and a salad with pork. There is local performance, namely the Apsara dance going on from time to time during our dinner. So, we enjoyed ourselves with the performance while having the dinner. Laterthat night before going back to our room, we went to Lucky Mall again to but our next day breakfast. We were taken by the salesgirl as Chinese from China. The salesgirl can speak good Mandarin and she’s happy that she found this chance to communicate with us in Mandarin. After a tiring day, everyone has a sound sleep that night.
( p/s: a small funny incident happened in the evening. i woke my sis up to get ready for the dinner and she thought we skipped our dinner that day when she woke up. She mistook the night to be the early morning.. Laughed till dead that day, memorable…haha )
the journey to Siem Reap will be continued in the next post. ![]()
